Screening for cervical cancer involves regular cervical smear tests. Among women aged between 35 and 64 years, the risk of cervical cancer is about 60–80% lower in women who are screened than in unscreened women, and the benefit increases with age.
Sometimes, it may be necessary to test for specific cancers in women who have symptoms suggesting that they might have the disease. This is particularly true for cervical and vulval cancers, and to a lesser extent for vaginal cancer.
